Activity categories

Group work types, set billability, lock the list, and limit categories by type.

Activity categories group work by type and keep the same color legend across timesheets, projects, clients, and reports.

Edit the category list

Open Activities and select Edit categories. Add, rename, or archive categories and subcategories. Archived categories can be restored. Descriptions help people and Timeglass choose the right one.

Billable categories

Each category has a Billable checkbox. Time in a non-billable category doesn’t count toward billable value. A billable category can also carry a Billable rate, which projects and clients billed at Activity rates use.

Category settings

  • Lock categories: Timeglass won’t create new categories. Activity that doesn’t fit the existing list stays uncategorized.
  • Only assign time to subcategories: when a category has subcategories, time can only go to the subcategories. Categories without subcategories are unaffected.

Both switches sit at the bottom of the category editor. Only assign time to subcategories appears once at least one category has subcategories.

Project types can restrict categories

A project type can allow every category or only a selected set. Turn on Limit Activity Categories on the type and pick the categories. Time on that type’s projects can then only use those categories. Review types in the Project Types view under Projects & Clients.

Common questions

How do I stop Timeglass from creating new categories?

Open Activities, select Edit categories, and turn on Lock categories. Activity that doesn’t fit the existing list stays uncategorized.

Can time go only to subcategories?

Yes. Turn on Only assign time to subcategories in the category editor. The switch appears once a category has subcategories. Categories without subcategories stay assignable.

How do I mark a category as non-billable?

Edit the category and clear the Billable checkbox. Time in it no longer counts toward billable value.
